weekend is here

The busy weekend is here...Paul and Elle are leaving at 7 for Oshkosh for the day, and Eva is still in Chicago touring. I have just an 8 hour day at work, and nothing extra so if should be easy. Last night Paul and I went out for dinner and it was very nice, although judging how busy the restaurant was, I wonder if the economy is so bad. Every table was taken. We go out so seldom, I guess I was just surprised. I don't think anyone eats at home anymore:) I had a nice treat yesterday after lunch, when I caught a couple of Stan's bowling games. Those folks are good...never mind their age! I hope I'm that active at 88. When I walked in, he had spared in the 5th. frame, and had a strike in the 6th. There were high fives all around. His team won the first game by 3, but lost the second by 3...very close. I had to leave before I could see the best 2 out of 3. Fun.

wintry mix

We're having a quiet evening inside due to the wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow. Eva and her Sabre Show troupe of singers and dancers are on the road tomorrow to Chicago, so I hope the roads are clear by 6 AM when they leave. Elle has district competition in Oshkosh tomorrow night, and then solo and ensemble on Saturday. Paul is of course accompanying several groups and students. He always enjoys being involved. I had a difficult day at work today. Our autistic young man assaulted a pregnant co-worker. She'll be O.K., but initially we had several anxious moments. The incident happened at the Mall, so is was exacerbated by security and police who have very little experience with autism, and so actually fueled the situation. All was quiet by the time I left. The client was back in the residence, and the woman took the rest of the day off. Good idea...she was quite shook up, but not seriously hurt thankfully. I have the day off tomorrow, but will check in early for an update.

good-bye to Dolan

Nice article from the paper...
Outgoing Dolan leaves positive impact on local Catholics
Milwaukee archbishop tabbed to lead Archdiocese of New York
BY LAURIE RITGER • The Reporter • February 24, 2009

Buzz up! The highest-ranking Catholic leader in Fond du Lac says Archbishop Timothy Dolan will be a “great gift” to the Archdiocese of New York.

The Very Rev. Patrick Heppe, who recently was selected by Dolan to serve as Vicar for Clergy at the Milwaukee Archdiocese, said Dolan will be missed for his energy and positive way of looking at things.

“I know the Archdiocese in Milwaukee responded very well to him,” Heppe said. “Because of that response, they may look for (a replacement) with a similar sense of pastoral care.”
Fond du Lac, Dodge and Sheboygan counties are part of the 10-county Milwaukee Archdiocese.

Heppe said one of the auxiliary bishops will be appointed to temporarily fill Dolan’s position — one that could remain open six months to a year or longer.

One man identified as a front-runner for archbishop is the Most Rev. Joseph Perry, an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

“Someone is appointed by Rome to be the next archbishop and it’s usually not a person from the Diocese,” Heppe said.

The official news Monday morning that Dolan has been appointed archbishop of New York, came after more than a year of speculation.

Heppe said he hadn’t spoken with Dolan recently, but noted that Dolan is scheduled to hold the 10:15 a.m. Easter Sunday mass at Fond du Lac’s Holy Family Parish. In light of the transfer, Heppe said he would not be surprised if Dolan could not keep the commitment.

Dolan, as part of a letter e-mailed to Heppe and church leaders at other parishes, said he was only recently told of his appointment to New York.

“It’s hardly a position one applies for!” Dolan said in the e-mail. “I was surprised, and still am. I was not asked if I would accept the position. The Papal Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, gently informed me, ‘The Holy Father has appointed you archbishop of New York.’”

Dolan admitted sadness at the prospect of leaving Milwaukee.

“In my brief six-and-a-half years as your pastor, I have come to know, love and appreciate you very much. I am home here. It will be very tough to leave.”

Still, he said that in the end, it’s not about his wishes — “It’s about Jesus and His Church.”

Dolan mentioned the start of Lent this week on Wednesday. He said he’ll be Milwaukee’s archbishop throughout the 40 days of Lent and will use the time for more intense prayer, penance and acts of charity as he opens himself to “the grace and mercy of Christ on the cross.”

He closed his e-mail by stating, “Tuesday I’m back with you, because I can’t find a paczki (Polish pastry traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday, the last Tuesday before Lent) in New York!”

The e-mail was sent at 4:50 a.m. Monday — about 10 minutes before the Vatican was set to announce that Pope Benedict XVI had named Dolan archbishop of New York.

The touch of humor present in Dolan’s message was not surprising to Heppe, who recalled Dolan’s first visit and how Dolan drove his car into Heppe’s open garage.

The New York archbishop post is the most prominent in the American Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II called it “archbishop of the capital of the world.” The archdiocese is the second-largest in the U.S., behind the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and serves 2.5 million parishioners in nearly 400 churches.

Heppe also remembered the visit came around the Feast of Three Kings (Epiphany). At one point, he heard Dolan singing the song “We Three Kings” at the top of his lungs from the bathroom.

Heppe, who has served the Fond du Lac Catholic community since 1989 and currently is moderator of the priest-team serving the merged parishes known as Holy Family, is moving into a leadership role with the Archdiocese.

He will leave Holy Family Parish sometime in June and begin duties in July as Vicar of Clergy at the Archdiocese in Milwaukee. Heppe’s major responsibility will be working with the personnel department to coordinate clergy opportunity.

The move will come with some unknowns as Dolan, his appointer, will have departed more than two months before Heppe begins his new role.

remembering Grandpa Les

Today we remember Grandpa Les on what would have been his 94th. birthday. Photo is a favorite from 1990. Today I made a fruit cocktail cake...one of his favorites:)

off in different directions

(Henry enjoys a treat.)
Folks in the extended family are all off in different directions this week. Jeff is skiing in Colorado, Mickey is in New York, Gretch, Justin and Koko are in Vegas, and Mike is back in Iraq working again. Closer to home, Elle is gone all day at a jazz festival in Sun Prairie, and the rest of us are stuck inside due to the snowstorm:( We decided to get our winter gear on, and walked Steven around the neighborhood. Quiet day otherwise...getting caught up with housework. Tomorrow, we're all helping/entertaining at the Taste of Fond du Lac. Event info below if any one's interested. http://www.fdlfest.com/taste/taste_of_fdl.html

"potty" buddies have a big day

As many of you know, Henry is potty trained. He says 'potty' when he has to go, or pulls my ear if he is on my shoulder. Well lately I've been thinking of potty training Earl. Although a sweet and gentle creature, Earl is a 'dim bulb' so to speak, and I knew it would be nearly impossible to train him to poop over the potty. I started with Earl and Henry in the bathroom, for many trials...a dozen or so a day. I put Henry over the potty first. Earl would watch, but seemed clueless. He just didn't get it. Today, Henry put his 'poop' in the potty as instructed, and Earl just watched. Again, I put Earl over the potty. He actually went. All the bells and whistles went off! But not before Henry said, "Good boy, Earl." This was SO cool, as I didn't say it first. Wow. I still can't believe it. Now, if we can only make it happen twice:)

this and that

This morning we woke to a fresh blanket of new snow. It's actually very lovely, although there's enough to shovel before work:( The photos are really random today. The red azalea is beautiful, as every flower seemed to bloom at once. It puts me in the mood for spring. I can't wait to start planning for this year's garden. Stan said he has lots of seeds from a neighbor who has a partner in the nursery business. "Marge" came over with a bag of seeds last year. Maybe he can spare some:) Also last night Henry spied the citrus fruit, which he loves, and asked for 'a bite' of an orange. Cute pic. Naughty bird.

looks like fun:)

Thanks to sister-in-law Kathy for the cute pics of niece Kylie and her friends ice bowling. It looks like their "Winter Carnival' was a lot of fun in Houghton this year. Kylie's the human bowling ball! Also, a special 'pet' to our critter friends from Michigan, Tymothy, Bud and Lil, who are visiting in Traverse City. Just a thought...could have used them for bowling balls, too:)

Welcome

A warm welcome to my newest grand-critter, Jacques. He belongs to Elise and James, and is a standard poodle...a big guy already at 20 some weeks old:) I like the 'shaggy' sheepdog look, and hope they let his coat grow. Can't wait to meet him. I guess he really took a shine to James.

Sassy Henry

Henry was busy today surveying the goodies for tomorrow's party. It will start after 3 PM, and Robin (foster sister and friend) will join us for supper. Here are a few neat Henry pictures.

Friday the 13th.

I thought it was fitting to feature our 3 black cats today, in honor of Friday, the 13th:) Don't their eyes look sinister?

tomorrow a day off

I'm happy to have a rare Friday off. I think I'll walk Steven, no matter what the weather brings. He has been such a patient and wonderful (outside) dog. He will enjoy the walk as much as I will. Then I want to catch Stan's bowling over the noon hour. He did really well last week...Go Stan at almost 88 years young. Afterward I have to buy paint for one of the rentals. Isn't it funny, how on my 'day off' I fill it with all sorts of things? It's true, as it is for many of us. Today Eva bought her new friend a 'garbage bowl' from Kohls. Funny. When I was a kid, this was unheard of. They are Rachel Ray fans. Me too, but I'm much more practical. Love to all in cyberland.

Chili Bowl

Today is Holy Family's "Chili Bowl" at the fairgrounds. It's a nice church picnic with games and prizes and of course chili. The chili is usually pretty good, and a bit spicy:) Today after mass, Henry and Earl had showers. They really love them, so I try to give them a shower weekly. Afterward they spent a lot of time preening, and look super shiny. Friday was very pleasant with a trip to Manitowoc to visit the whole family...Jeff and Mickey joined us as well, so we had a regular feast. Also visited with friend Kim and actually spent the night at her place, which gave us a nice chance to 'catch up' with all the news of our high school friends. Late in the afternoon on Saturday, Aliyah and I visited with Stan and enjoyed the beautiful weather, with a high of 50. Then we headed back home where Paul was grilling out. It really gave us the springtime feeling:) Can't wait for the real thing.

snow snow snow

Uncle Paul called niece Kylie to wish her a happy birthday. She informed him that Houghton (Michigan Tech) received 30 inches of snow on her birthday:) She was thrilled. She is a lover of winter:) Makes me feel a little guilty about complaining about Fondy's weather.

Elle and new sax

Elle is thrilled this week because we purchased a new Yanagisawa alto sax for her. With all the playing she's doing, and especially with the symphonic band, she really needed the 'step up' to a professional instrument. She loves it. She spends all of her free time playing. Reminds me of Eva when we purchased her German violin. We've had one of those moments where we felt really good about spending money:) Photos to come.

Happy Birthday to Kylie:)

Happy 20th. today to niece Kylie in Upper Michigan. I will find a nice photo...hint to sister-in-law...send a recent photo:) Love you folks.
